How Much Does It Cost To Maintain A Pool In Australia? – 2024 Update

April 22, 2025

You might not know, but we Australians own more pools per head than in any other country. Recent studies show that one in seven Australians, or approximately 3.1 million people, live in a house with a swimming pool or spa, marking an increase from previous years. This data was highlighted in a study by Roy Morgan. This stretches from about 24 per cent of the population owning a pool in Regional Queensland down to about 8 per cent in Regional Victoria.

One thing these folks have in common is that they know the cost of a swimming pool is more than the initial outlay and that asking the question, “How much does it cost to maintain a pool in Australia?” is essential when you’re drawing up your plans for a beautiful new pool. To help you, we’ve put together our Gibson Family Pools guide to pool maintenance costs.

The Cost Of Pool Maintenance

To really enjoy the fun and flexibility of having your pool, it’s important to keep it in tip-top condition. Having a good idea of pool maintenance costs is also useful before you take the plunge into pool ownership. We’ve used an 8m x 4m pool as our model, so the costs will adjust accordingly if your pool is much bigger or smaller.

According to HiPages, Australians spend about $600 to $1500 or more on pool maintenance per year.

  • Your pool could cost up to $1200 per year, depending on how long it runs for each day.
  • Heating is an important variable when it comes to cost. Solar heating is the most economical, costing around $100-$200 annually. Next up is electric heating, which costs $250-$750 per year and gas, which comes in at $500-$1500 over the course of the year.
  • Your pool cleaning company will charge between $60 and $150 per clean – the number of cleans you need will vary depending on how often the pool is used, from four times a year up to about once a month for frequent use. If you clean your pool yourself, you can save on some costs here.
  • Unless you choose a saltwater pool, chemicals are used to keep the pool safe and the average cost is around $200 per year.

Cost Of Replacement Parts

At Gibson Family Pools, we use top-quality components in all our pool installations. Over time, even the best parts can wear out, though, so it’s important to factor in the cost of replacements.

  • Replacement pump: $500 – $1000
  • LED lighting: around $320
  • Heater: between $3000 – $6000 depending on the energy source

How To Keep Pool Maintenance Costs Low

One of the benefits of buying from the experts at Gibson Family Pools is that we’ve got lots of simple tips to help you keep your pool maintenance costs to a minimum. Simple things like getting a good pool cover will minimise evaporation and reduce the amount of debris in the pool, so you’ll need fewer cleaning sessions.

Installing a new pool means you’ve got choices over things like the energy source for heating – solar energy is a no-brainer both for your pocket and the planet. You can also choose some of our innovative materials, like fibreglass, which copes perfectly with the rigours of the weather, so your long-term costs can be kept low.
